Tarte is the first brand that comes to mind when I think about makeup with a conscience. They are entirely cruelty free, vegan friendly, and are certified by PETA. Still, they provide some of the highest quality makeup I have come across, and though it is not the cheapest brand, you won’t feel guilty splurging on their products.
My introduction to this brand was actually done through the original Tartelette palette. Initially, I thought the packaging was really cute and that was my only reason for buying it. When I received and swatched it, I was actually amazed at how buttery and pigmented the shadows were.
So, you can imagine my excitement when I heard the news that Tarte was releasing a new version of the Tartelette, called the Tartelette in Bloom. Of course, I had to run out and buy the palette, and was very pleased to notice that although the palettes had a lot in common, they were very different.
For this blog post, I decided to put the palettes head to head, and compare them to each other in every aspect. This is the Battle of the Tartelettes, and hopefully by the end, you guys can decide which one you prefer.

Before jumping into the differences between the palettes, there are a few similarities between the two, mostly in terms of packaging. They are both the same size and shape: a very sleek high quality plastic case that snaps open and shut. They both have a large mirror on the inside that can stand up on its own, and thats something I always appreciate if I’m on the go. They both contain twelve eyeshadows, each pan containing approximately 0.125 g of product, bringing that to a total of 1.50 g of product. Another similarity is that both palettes are arranged in the same format in that each row is meant to create its own look i.e. each row contains a crease, lid, outer v, and highlight shade. Both palettes go for $45 on the Tarte website.
Moving on to the actual part that matters: the differences. The two most prominent differences between the palettes are the tones of each, and the finish of the eyeshadows.
For starters, the original Tartelette has more of a cooler mauve undertone to it, making it perfect for those who prefer a more sultry eye look. The colors are much deeper and darker as well, and much more suitable for smokier looks. As per the finish, all the shadows are a matte finish, so there isn’t much variety in that aspect.
The Tartelette in Bloom palette has a warmer more brown undertone to it. Its a lot easier to pull of more wearable and natural looks with this palette. The shadows almost feel smoother to me in this palette, however I’m not sure whether its because its newer or because Tarte improved their formula. What I was really excited about is that Tarte featured three beautiful lustre shades in this version.
Now for the best part – Swatches!
Disclaimer: Realistically, I never wear eyeshadows without an eye primer, and for these swatches, I used my Benefit Stay Don’t Stray primer in Light/Medium and had no issue whatsoever with the pigmentation or color payoff of every single eyeshadow.

I hope after reading the post and seeing the swatches, you have made a decision on which is the better palette. Honestly, I love them both so much, but my advice would be that if you’re looking for a beginner’s palette or are looking to buy only one, the Tartelette in Bloom would be better overall in terms of wearable colors and experimentation with different finishes, whereas the original Tartelette would be better if you’re looking to expand your collection or are looking for solely good quality matte shadows in a single palette.
